A Brief History of the Second-Generation Corvette
|
The Corvette Body Style C2, also known as the mid-year Corvette, was a beloved generation of the iconic sports car that Larry Shinoda initially designed. Inspired by the unproduced "Q Corvette" by Peter Brock and Chuck Pohlmann, the C2 generation spanned from 1963 to 1967. With its unique design elements, advanced features, and robust engines, the C2 Corvette left an indelible mark on automotive history.
Evolution of the C2
- 1963: The Corvette Body Style C2 was introduced. It featured a coupe with a distinctive split rear window, non-functioning hood vents, and an independent rear suspension. Power for this year was 360 hp, which was later increased to 375 hp in 1964.
- 1964: The split rear window was discontinued due to safety concerns.
- 1965: Four-wheel disc brakes and a "big block" engine option (396 CID V8) were introduced. Side exhaust pipes also became optional.
- 1966: An even larger 427 CID version of the engine was introduced. Additionally, a rare L-88 version of the 427 was introduced, with some estimates placing its actual output at 560 hp or more.
- 1967: The 1282 cu ft/min Holley tri-power carburetor was available on the 427. The Corvette Body Style C3 was initially planned for this year but was delayed until 1968.
- 1968: The first year to introduce the L-88 motor option, with about 550 bhp.
- 1969: Early options available on the Corvette Body Style C2 included an AM-FM radio (mid-1963), air conditioning (1963), a telescopic steering wheel (1965), and headrests (1966).
- 2004: The Sting Ray was named number five on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s by Sports Car International.
Other Interesting Facts
- The design of the C2 Corvette drew inspiration from the Jaguar E-Type and a mako shark that Bill Mitchell had caught while deep-sea fishing.
- In 1961, Corvette sold over 10,000 vehicles in a year for the first time.
- A lightweight version of the Corvette Body Style C2, known as the Grand Sport Corvette, was planned, but only five were built. These cars are now highly coveted and valuable.
- The Z06 performance package on later Corvette models is named after a performance option that dates back to the 1963 model year.
A True American Automotive Icon
The Corvette Body Style C2 left an indelible mark on automotive history, influencing subsequent generations, including the Corvette Body Style C1 and Corvette Body Style C3. Their distinctive design, muscular appearance, and exceptional performance make them stand out as a timeless classic that continues to capture the hearts and minds of enthusiasts.
